Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are renowned on the New York scene for their commitment
to preserving and authentically presenting 1920s jazz and dance music styles of the period between 1919 and the mid-1930s. In 30 years as a bandleader, Vince Giordano has become the authority on recreating the sounds of 1920s and '30s popular music. "I just love the energy of the early jazz," says Giordano. "I wanted to recapture some of that."

A musician and arranger, Giordano is also a big-band historian and collector, and has more than
30,000 scores in his collection. In addition to playing the string bass, Giordano is a multi-instrumentalist on tuba, banjo, rhythm guitar, piano and drums, and bass saxophone, which anchors the Nighthawks' rhythm section on many Dixieland or “hot jazz” arrangements.
Giordano’s early appearances with Leon Redbone, and his frequent appearances on Garrison Keillor’s  radio program, A Prairie Home Companion led to working with Dick Hyman’s Orchestra in half a dozen Woody Allen soundtracks and then as a bass player in Sean Penn’s band in Woody’s Sweet and Lowdown. He and the band were featured in a number of films including Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Cotton Club, Gus Van Sant’s film Finding Forrester, Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, and in Robert DeNiro’s film, The Good Shepherd. Recently, Vince has worked with Sam Mendes on Revolutionary Road and the upcoming Farlanders; as well as with Michael Mann on his latest film Public Enemies.

The Jazz ‘n the Hall Concert Series traces the history of an American musical art form which originated in the beginning of the 20th century. From its early development until the present, jazz has incorporated music from 19th and 20th century American popular music. By exploring the subgenres of American Jazz, the Series presents a broad overview of this uniquely American experience. The Nighthawks recreation of New Orleans Dixieland music from the early part of the 20th century through the big band swing style of the 1930’s provides the listener with a brief look into the evolution of jazz as we know it today.
